What is WEEE recycling? A plain-English guide for businesses
If your business has old laptops, monitors or servers to get rid of, here's what WEEE means in plain English, and what you should expect from any collector.
If your business has a cupboard full of old laptops, a stack of dead monitors or a server room that needs clearing, you've probably been told to "make sure it's WEEE compliant". But what does that actually mean? Here's the short version, without the jargon.
What WEEE actually is
WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. It's the UK and EU framework for how discarded electronics should be collected, treated and recycled, so that hazardous materials (like the ones inside batteries and old circuit boards) don't end up in landfill, and so useful materials get recovered.
In practice, it means business waste electronics should be passed to a properly registered waste carrier and processed through licensed treatment routes, rather than binned, fly-tipped or shipped overseas.
What it means for your business
- Don't bin it. Business electronics are classified as waste, and sending them to general waste skips isn't compliant.
- Use a registered carrier. Whoever collects your equipment should be a registered waste carrier and happy to say so.
- Keep the paperwork. You should receive documentation recording what was collected. Keep it: it's your evidence of proper disposal.
- Handle data separately. Hard drives and other data-bearing devices need their own story: wiping, or physical destruction, with records of what was done.
Questions worth asking any collector
Before you book anyone, ask: are you a registered waste carrier? What paperwork will I get? What happens to the equipment after collection? How is data on hard drives handled? A good collector will answer plainly, in writing, before collecting anything.
